Overview
Ephemeral is a thought-provoking art magazine that delves into the fleeting, impermanent nature of art and artistic movements. To encapsulate this ethos through design, I leaned heavily on fundamentally strong layout grids, typographic craft, and natural metaphors.
Approach
The overall art direction pays homage to the clean, museum-esque aesthetic exemplified by institutions like SFMOMA. This established a suitably minimalist yet intellectually-rich foundation from which to artistic ephemerality could be expressed.
Neue Haas Unica's refined sans-serif forms and rational proportions create a recognizably high-brow typographic attitude. Deploying the typeface with precise spacing and composition instills each page spread with a galleryesque sense of order and permanence. This provides the perfect classical framework to then disrupt and juxtapose with design treatments exploring the contrary theme of transience.
